Book Series

This is a running list of book series or authors I have come across that you might want to check out. We haven’t read every book in each series, but we have seen enough to think they are promising books. Of course the ones we have reviewed can be found in the review section of this blog.

The Cowboy Sam Series by Edna Walker Chandler: A delightful series, illustrated with ink drawings and three or four colors from the 1950’s and 1960’s.  This was the first set of books that really got my second son reading. They are mostly easy chapter books, appropriate for first through third graders. They can be found on used book websites and we’ve found a few at second hand stores and book and garage sales. Due to the era in which they are written there a few which would be considered politically incorrect in that native Americans are referred to as ‘injuns.’ Not all of the series has this problem. A few are historical in nature such as Cowboy Sam and the Talking Wire, and Cowboy Sam and the Airplane.  Grades 1-4

Fact based fiction by Shannon Garst.  This author has a long list of books historical in nature revolving around the early American West. My boys love these books.  Subjects include  Charles M. Russell, James Bowie, Jim Bridger, Buffalo Bill, Amelia Earhart and fictional characters living and settling in the West.  Most of these books were written between 1950 – 1966. Grades 3-6+

Landmark Series of Historical Biographies. Published in the 1950’s and 60’s by Random House and containing over 100 titles covering prominent figures in American History. We have read Daniel Boone, Kit Carson, and Davy Crockett.  We’ll be trying to find more of these and adding them to our library. They are detailed enough for school reports, etc., but very readable.  There is also a World Landmark Series covering world history. Grades 4+

Billy and Blaze Books by C.W. Anderson. A great series of books about the boy Billy and his horse Blaze. The first of the series was written in 1936 and Mr. Anderson went on to write 10 more. Billy and Blaze develop a trusting partnership as they face challenges and adventures. Grades 1-4

Classic Starts published by Sterling Publishers. An extensive collection of abridged classics for children ages 7-9, but don’t overlook these for older kids who are looking for an easy, relaxing read of favorite stories such as Treasure Island, Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Swiss Family Robinson,  Robinson Crusoe, The Last of the Mohicans, Moby Dick, Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Heidi and much more.
