Are We Too Familiar with the Bible?

January 7, 2012

A recent online discussion centered around the current trend in some charismatic churches to run after ‘encounters,’ ‘experiences,’ and meditation to ‘hear from God,’  even though this attitude, or the practice of meditation to hear from God is absent from the scriptures.

The question arose “Why don’t we read something like ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you‘ and it not be a profound experience?”  Why is that not something that settles our hearts forever? Have we, as American Christians, lost our belief – our heart strong belief- that the scriptures are the very Words of God to us, as intimately and intentionally spoken as any other word?

Because of the easy availability of Bibles, have we forgotten the words encountered there are the very words of life? Do we forget that brothers and sisters in other parts of the world may forfeit their lives to obtain, read, and preach the words contained in scripture?

Have we grown too familiar with the Bible? Is it just another book on the shelf, while we run after ‘words’ from self appointed prophets, self seeking speakers, or our own imaginations?

Heard this song the other day…..

We pray for wisdom,

Your voice to hear

We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near

We doubt Your goodness

we doubt Your love

As if every promise from Your Word is not enough

Listen to Laura Story explain how this song came about.

You can listen to the song, Blessings, here.  And purchase it through her website here.

Too many think they know the bible without actually having read it as an adult. That’s what I’ve found anyway. But it’s so surprising just how relevant it is! People owe it to their intelligence to at least investigate who the real Jesus is!

I agree. God is not afraid of an honest question. I know people who say they cannot believe the Bible because of what they were taught in college about evolution or what have you. I tell them, “If that is the only thing holding you back, you should investigate the claims from an objective stance. Don’t just believe what you have been told.”

The scriptures are able to defend themselves.

      Thanks for stopping by!
